Sandstone Falls Park
Largest waterfalls on New River.
From the town of Sandstone head south to Hinton. You will be on Route 20. High above the river are two park vistas; Sandstone Falls Overlook 600 feet above river, Brooks Overlook looks down on a mile-long Brooks Island, a Bald Eagle nesting site.

New River Road
After crossing the bridge at Hinton you will begin driving alongside the New River downriver Road. There are great riverside vistas, river access points, a small boardwalk at Brooks Falls, a powerful Class III rapid. The journey ends at the Sandstone Falls day use area. There is a boardwalk and bridges that span the two islands below the falls.

Return to Beckley Fairfield Inn. Fastest is via route state rt 20 I64 - 25 mins.

Highland National Scenic Highway

Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, four Scenic Overlooks on Rt. 150 (Parkway). Falls of Hill Creek.
Directions: From Beckley to Richwood via rt. 19    68 miles 1 hr. 21 mins
The Highland National Scenic Highway is 43 miles from Richwood to U.S. Route 219, miles north of Marlinton. The highway follows State Route 39/55 for 21 miles from Richwood to the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center. It then turns into State Route 150 (Parkway section) for 22 miles to U.S. Route 219. The Highway traverses the mountainous terrain of the Allegheny Highlands and Plateau and rises from Richwood, elevation 2325 feet to over 4,500 feet.

Falls of Hill Creek
Located 16-17 miles east of Richwood , WV on the way to the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center. The Falls are 6 miles before the Cranberry Mt. Nature Center. Road to Falls is on right. Beaver dam is on left side of highway. There is a 0.3 mile paved path with viewing platform. The remainder of the three quarter mile trail to the second and third Falls is strenuous with stairways and boardwalks.

Cranberry Mountain Nature Center 22 miles
Located at the junction of rt. 39/55 and rt. 150.

Cranberry Glades Botanical Area
The Bogs are a 750 acre wetlands. A half-mile long barrier- free boardwalk is available. The road to the Glades is located on rt. 39/150, 1/2 mile before the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center.                  

Four Scenic overlooks are located on parkway (rt. 150) portion of the Highway. The overlooks provide spectacular views of the Allegheny Highlands.

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park 23 miles

Droop Mountain is known Battle of Droop Mountain, the last major American Civil War conflict in WV. The park has an on-site museum with exhibits about, local history, the Battle of Droop Mountain, and Civil War artifacts
Beartown State Park         4.6 miles 9 mins
Photo opt: Boardwalk through unusual rock formation.
Some very hungry bears looking for photographers! A 110-acre natural area located on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain. Beartown has unusual rocky formations, massive boulders, overhanging cliffs and deep crevices. The park’s half-mile boardwalk showcases these spectacular sights.
